The Official Story

Do I think Alicia is able to reconcile her personal thoughts about her suspicions that Gabby is the child of a murdered political prisoner?  This is one of those movies that leave you with more questions than answers. I suppose each viewer can draw their own conclusion. I do think that Gabby is indeed the Sara’s granddaughter. But I suppose we’ll never know for sure unless they make a sequel.
Alicia and Roberto live comfortable life and are obviously well-to-do. They are raising their adopted daughter, Gaby, whom they both love with all their heart and soul. During the military coup they remained safe and wealthy due to Roberto’s high-level contacts.  It is those contacts also that allow them to adopt Gaby. During the military coup, the military routinely tortured and murdered students, political activists, and opponents of the regime. Some of the prisoners who were pregnant and gave birth during their captivity had their babies taken away and given to high ranking government families.  Although, at the time of the adoption, Alicia isn’t aware that is how they were able to adopt Gaby. I don’t know how it feels to have an infertility problem, but I can imagine how devastating it must be. However, I also can’t imagine my husband arranging for the adoption and me not being involved in the process or agreeing not to ask questions about it.
When Alicia learns the truth about why her friend Ana had been living in Europe for many years, she begins to wander if Gaby may be a child of a political prisoner. Add this to her students constantly disbelieving what they read in their text books and the protests by the Grandmothers of the Plaza de Mayo she further wanders about the truth. She becomes obsessed with the possibility of the truth and starts her desperate search for the truth. The thought of the truth terrifies her. Then she meets Sara, whose pregnant daughter was taken during the coup. Sara eventually learns of Gaby and notices the resemblance between Gaby and her daughter. When Sara tells Alicia she thinks Gaby may be her granddaughter, Alicia is obviously torn with what the right thing to do is. When she confronts Roberto, whose professional and political world is crumbling, becomes enraged and physically abuses her. When she leaves him, it appears to be for good, as she leaves the keys in the door. The question remains did she go get Gaby, did she continue to raise Gaby, did she give Gaby to Sara? I’d like to think she continues to raise Gaby, and if Gaby really was Sara’s granddaughter, I hope she was able to be a part of her life.
